Although the Made in Italy is famous throughout the world such as Italian Food, Italian Fashion, Italian Cars just to name a few, are highly sought after, there is one thing in which the Italians are not at the top of the ranking i.e. when it comes to speaking English.
Italian citizens of all ages make fun of the way Italian VIPs speak in English. No need to mention names… if you are Italian and you are reading this blog, I’m sure you have already thought of a name. So when by pure chance, I was drawn into the business of teaching English, little did I know what was in stall for me.
In the beginning, all my energies went into doing a good job. That’s all I was really interested in since I didn’t really have any experience. Yet, as the years of teaching built up, I went from doing a good job to analysing the situation… Sorry guys, but after practically 20 years of market analysis for a multinational company, it was the most natural thing to do. As a natural market analyst, I decided to take a look at the reasons behind all this but where to start? Of course, I had to take into account the didactics, the methods widely used over the Italian territory and last, but not at all least, the level of the teachers.
To my great surprise, I discovered that the didactics hadn’t changed in years, that the method was always the same and that the level of the teachers left plenty to be desired. But who and what was behind all this?
In recent years, the Government has taken extra measures – and invested extra funds – to turn the trend around such as turning CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning into law and starting a campaign for the certifications of the English language of the Italian English teachers. And that is precisely where The Get Gong Method came to light!
