Did you know that August 14th is International Calligraphy Day? It’s a celebration of the art of handwriting — and yes, it comes just one day after International Left-Handers Day. Coincidence? Maybe not. Left-handers definitely deserve some ink love too!
The word calligraphy comes from the Greek words kallos (beautiful) and graphein (to write). In other words, calligraphy means “beautiful writing.” In a world where most of us spend our time typing on keyboards and screens, this day reminds us of the timeless value of pen and paper.
You may think handwriting is old-fashioned, but it’s still everywhere. Students often write by hand when studying — it helps memory and concentration. Writers use notebooks to disconnect from distractions and get closer to their thoughts. Artists love ink for its organic, emotional touch. Even astronauts in space write by hand! They use special pens that work without gravity, Wi-Fi, or batteries. Just pure ink and motion.
Now, let’s talk about left-handed people. In the past, being a “lefty” was seen as a problem. The Latin word for left, sinister, also meant “bad”! Teachers used to force children to write with their right hands — unfair and frustrating. But times have changed. Today, we celebrate legendary lefties like Barack Obama, Leonardo da Vinci, and Oprah Winfrey.
And what about your handwriting? Believe it or not, there’s a science called graphology that claims your writing style reflects your personality. Big letters may show confidence. Right-leaning lines? You might be expressive or social. Even the pen you choose says something — gel pen lovers tend to be creative, while hotel pen users might be spontaneous (or forgetful!).
